BCCI’s Bold Move to Double Domestic Players’ Earnings, Ranji Players will Earn 1 Cr for 10 Matches

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling over ways to boost the earnings of domestic players. Ajit Agarkar’s selection committee has been entrusted with the task of proposing ideas to enhance the remuneration structure.

While an immediate announcement regarding increased match fees isn’t expected, discussions have commenced within the national selection committee. The primary goal is to ensure that domestic players not participating in the IPL feel adequately compensated.

There’s consensus within the BCCI that the fees for domestic cricketers need to be doubled at the very least. Additionally, there’s a proposal to enable domestic players to earn between INR 75 lakh to INR 1 crore annually if they have played at least 10 Ranji Trophy games.

Currently, the BCCI pays INR 60,000 per day to players who have featured in more than 40 Ranji games. Those with 21 to 40 games receive INR 50,000, while those with 20 games or less get INR 40,000. Reserves are paid INR 30,000, INR 25,000, and INR 20,000, respectively, in these categories.

Based on this payment structure, senior cricketers stand to earn up to INR 25 lakh if their team reaches the final, with others making between INR 17 lakh and INR 22 lakh.

Moreover, players will also earn from other BCCI events, such as white-ball tournaments like the Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali trophies. There’s a strong possibility that player remuneration will see an increase starting from the next season as part of the BCCI’s efforts to maximize domestic players’ earnings.

The overarching plan aims to incentivize domestic players to actively participate in the Ranji Trophy. Some players refrained from playing red-ball cricket last season to mitigate the risk of injury and stay fit for the IPL. This initiative aligns with the BCCI’s objective of promoting red-ball cricket, as highlighted by Secretary Jay Shah’s announcement of higher match fees for Test matches.

Sunil Gavaskar, a cricketing legend, has welcomed Jay Shah’s announcement and proposed further doubling or tripling of fees for domestic cricketers. He believes that significantly increasing Ranji Trophy fees would reduce player pullouts and foster greater participation in the tournament.

Gavaskar emphasized that if the fees for playing Ranji Trophy matches are attractive, fewer players would opt out for various reasons, thus strengthening the tournament’s competitiveness and appeal.
