WI vs IND Test 1 Highlights: India registered their biggest ever Test win outside of Asia when they beat West Indies by an innings and 141 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two Test series on Friday (July 14).

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were the wreckers in chief with the ball – Ashwin got 7-71 and Jadeja got 2-38, with Mohammed Siraj taking the remaining wicket.

But the match was in many ways set up by a good batting performance from India in the first innings. They began Day 3 with Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease.

Kohli looked to play patiently and dealt more in 1s and 2s than boundaries. It is telling that, in his innings of 76, he only hit 5 boundaries.

Jaiswal was the first wicket of the day to fall, meaning he missed out on a double century by just 29 runs. Ajinkya Rahane fell shortly thereafter, as did Kohli himself.

But some valuable rearguard action from Jadeja – 37 from 82 balls – took India past the 400-run mark when skipper Rohit Sharma surprised everyone by declaring in the 153rd over.

At that time, India had a 271-run lead and thus it seemed plausible that they could have wrapped up the Test on the same day.

True enough, by the time it was tea West Indies were already 2 wickets down and it only looked like an uphill struggle from there on out.

Ashwin removed skipper Kraigg Brathwaite whereas Jadeja accounted for Tagenarine Chanderpaul. Raymon Reifer and Jermaine Blackwood did not last long after lunch; Blackwood was trapped plumb by Ashwin and Reifer fell the same way to Jadeja.

Alick Athanaze and Joshua Da Silva put up a brief resistance that ended when Da Silva was trapped plumb by Siraj.

And Athanaze, the only Windies batsman who escapes this Test match with any credit in the bank, fell shortly thereafter to Ashwin when Jaiswal took a good catch at short leg.

The result was never in doubt at that point, though some decent batting from Jason Holder (20*) and Alzarri Joseph (13) meant West Indies did put up a little bit of a fight towards the end.

But Rahkeem Cornwall (4) and Kemar Roach (0) fell cheaply, before Jomel Warrican played an entertaining cameo – a run-a-ball 18 – towards the end. But once he too was trapped plumb by Ashwin, that was all she wrote for the home team.
