Due to geopolitical and sporting reasons, Ind vs Pak is one of the biggest rivalries in the history of the Cricket World Cup. What’s even more amazing is that, despite this being such a big rivalry, these two sides didn’t clash in the first four editions of the ICC World Cup!

This was down to the format as well as some fortune; the two teams were drawn in different groups in the first two editions and did not make it to the knockouts.

In 1983 and 1987, they were once again drawn in separate groups but made it to the semi-finals, but in both cases did not play each other.

However, that left the door open for an Ind vs Pak final on both occasions but it never happened – even though both nations were the hosts in the 1987 edition!

Nevertheless, they have played each other in every edition barring 2007 since then and India have a formidable record against their arch-rivals – they have never lost a game to Pakistan in the ODI World Cup.

Here we will take a look at every match played between the two nations in the history of the Cricket World Cup.

Ind Vs Pak ODI World Cup 1992 – India won by 43 runs

The year 1992 was a year of contrasting fortunes for both teams. While Pakistan went on to win their first and so far only Cricket World Cup, India only won two matches in that tournament and crashed out before the knockouts. But one of those wins came against Pakistan.

Opting to bat first, India rode on a half-century from Sachin Tendulkar to post a total of 216-7 – one over was reduced due to Pakistan maintaining a slow over rate. In response, Pakistan could manage only 173 as, despite contributions of 62 from Aamer Sohail and 40 from Javed Miandad, the rest of the batting order collapsed.

Ind Vs Pak ODI World Cup 1996 – India won by 39 runs

This was a historic fixture as the two nations were meeting in the knockout stages of the Cricket World Cup for the first time ever. And India, cheered on by a raucous home crowd in Bengaluru, emerged victorious in comprehensive fashion.

An aggressive 93 by Navjot Singh Sidhu and useful contributions from the middle order took India to an over-par total of 287-8. Pakistan, despite getting a good start, were unable to keep up with a climbing run rate and ended up losing 9 wickets enroute to a total of 248 and were thus eliminated from the tournament.

Ind Vs Pak ODI World Cup 1999– India won by 47 runs

This year’s edition of the tournament was another one of contrasting fortunes for the two teams. Pakistan topped the table in the Super Six and went on to play – and lose to – Australia in the final, whereas India finished at the bottom of the Super Six table with only one win. But that sole win came against Pakistan!

Batting first, India rode on a half-century from Rahul Dravid (61) to post a par total of 227-6. It was a total that could have been chased down but Venkatesh Prasad had a fine day, taking 5 wickets and conceding just 27 runs in his 9.3 overs to ensure India were runaway winners by a huge margin of 43 runs.

Ind Vs Pak ODI World Cup 2003 – India won by 6 wickets

Ind vs Pak ODI World Cup 2003 in South Africa marked the first time in the history of the Cricket World Cup that the two sides clashed in the group stages of the tournament. And it was, in many ways, a high-scoring thriller that is remembered for an iconic knock from Sachin Tendulkar.

A Saeed Anwar ton propelled Pakistan to a score of 273-7 in the first innings and they had plenty of reasons to be confident of a win. However, Tendulkar’s 98 off 75 balls – which saw him struggle with cramps towards the end of his innings – proved vital as India went on to chase down the target with 4.2 overs to spare!

In a tournament jointly hosted by India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, it was India and Pakistan who met in the semi-final. And it was a hotly-contested affair too, as political tensions between the two nations were at an all-time high and India were desperate to win their first World Cup in 28 years.

Things did not get off to the best of starts as, despite a Sachin Tendulkar 85, Pakistan managed to restrict India to 260-9 in their first innings. However, Pakistan wound up losing despite a fighting 56 from Misbah-ul-Haq as a lack of partnerships in the middle order hurt them and they were dismissed for just 231 with a ball to spare.

Ind Vs Pak ODI World Cup 2015– India won by 76 runs

Ind vs Pak ODI World Cup 2015 not only saw both sides clubbed together in the same group, but also play their opening game against each other. However, any hopes of a competitive bout were snuffed out pretty much as soon as the first innings was done.

This is because India, buoyed by a hundred from Virat Kohli (107) and fifties from Shikhar Dhawan (73) and Suresh Raina (74) posted 300/7 in the first innings. Pakistan were never able to get going, and a valiant 76 from Misbah ended up in vain as the rest of Pakistan’s batting order simply didn’t show up.

Ind Vs Pak ODI World Cup 2019 – India won by 89 runs

This match very nearly did not happen, as both former India players and the BCCI wanted this match boycotted due to the Pulwama attacks that happened earlier in the year. However, the match went ahead as planned – and it was the most one-sided thrashing in the history of this rivalry at World Cups.

A big century from Rohit Sharma (140) as well as fifties from KL Rahul (57) and Virat Kohli (77) saw India post 336-5, with Pakistan only managing a paltry 212-6 in response while chasing a rain reduced target of 302 in 40 overs.
