Let’s see IPL Winners of 17 seasons since it was first launched in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a must-watch event for cricket fans all over the world and has revolutionized the game of T20 cricket.

In its entire history, the tournament has seen a number of title winners. Here we will take a look at the winner of each edition of the IPL.

IPL Winners 2008

Rajasthan Royals

Few if any expected Rajasthan Royals to end up winning the first edition of the IPL but the Jaipur-based franchise, who didn’t quite have the star power of some other teams, proved all of the doubters and naysayers wrong.

Under the captaincy of Shane Warne, they not only topped the league stages but also won a thrilling final off the last ball of the game to lift the first-ever edition of the tournament – a distinction they will hold on to forever.

IPL Winners 2009

Deccan Chargers

The second edition of the IPL very nearly didn’t happen, as India’s general elections threatened to wreak havoc on the tournament. Nonetheless, the tournament was shifted to South Africa and successfully held in the rainbow nation.

The 2009 edition provided a redemption arc of sorts for Deccan Chargers, who finished last in the table in 2008 but went on to win the second edition. They did so by scripting a win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a low-scoring thriller of a final.

IPL Winners 2010

Chennai Super Kings

The 2010 final was, in many ways, the foreshadowing of the dominance of not one but two sides as the teams that clashed in the final were the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians, neither of whom had won the tournament up until that point.

Nevertheless, Chennai had played one final and it was their experience that won out on the night as they went on to register a comprehensive victory in the final by 22 runs and thus began a run that would see them lift 3 more IPL trophies in the future.

IPL Winners 2011

Chennai Super Kings

If there was one thing that was all but guaranteed with the IPL at this point, its that the finals would be thrillers. However, 2011 bucked that trend in a big way – and also handed CSK their second title in as many years.

Batting first in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore, CSK put up a mammoth total of 205-5 thanks in no small part to Murali Vijay’s 95. In response, RCB could manager only 147-8 in response – a crushing defeat for the away side on the night.

IPL Winners 2012

Kolkata Knight Riders

Chennai were gunning for a hat-trick of titles in 2012 and were in with a good chance given they played the final at home and also faced first-time finalists Kolkata Knight Riders in the marquee clash of the tournament. Confidence would have again been sky high when they scored 190 batting first.

However, Manvinder Bisla had other ideas and his attacking 89 gave Kolkata a fighting chance. The match was sealed with 2 balls to spare courtesy of a boundary from Manoj Tiwary, and KKR had lifted their first IPL title at last.

IPL Winners 2013

Mumbai Indians

The final of 2013 was a rematch of the 2010 final, as Chennai Super Kings took on the Mumbai Indians in Kolkata. However, while the first final these two played was won by Chennai, that would not be the same story 3 years later.

Putting 148-9 on the board, Mumbai were able to restrict Chennai to 125-9 in their 20 overs thanks to some excellent bowling on what was a fairly tricky wicket. The win would also end up becoming the first of 5 titles that MI would go on to win.

IPL Winners 2014

Kolkata Knight Riders

The 2014 final was notable for being the first time that the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) had made it to the final, and only the second time that they made it to the playoffs. Nevertheless, they did start the final favourites against 2012 champions Kolkata Knight Riders.

A ton from Wriddhiman Saha helped KXIP get 199-4 in their 20 overs but a counter-attacking 94 from Manish Pandey and some useful lower order contributions helped KKR lift their second title in 3 years, with Piyush Chawla ending the final with a boundary.

IPL Winners 2015

Mumbai Indians

The 2013 final saw another encounter between Chennai and Mumbai – the third time these two teams had contested the final against each other up until this point, meaning this was fast becoming IPL’s biggest rivalry in terms of success in summit clashes.

And it was once again Mumbai who emerged victorious, as the target of 202-5 they set proved far too much to get for the Chennai team – and also extended their winning run over their rivals in IPL finals, besides equaling the number of titles they had won.

IPL Winners 2016

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The 2016 final presented arguably the best opportunity to the Royal Challengers Bangalore – arguably the league’s biggest underperformers – to win the title. Their captain and talisman Virat Kohli was in flying form, and scored 973 runs in the season – still a record.

And the final, up against first-time finalists Sunrisers Hyderabad, was held in the city of Bengaluru. Nevertheless, it was the David Warner-led Sunrisers who won their first title, defending a score of 208-7 and denying RCB a fairytale title win.

IPL Winners 2017

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai drew clear of the pack in 2017 by becoming the first team to win a third IPL title – and in some sense of irony, they did so against a team that was captained by one MS Dhoni. Except it wasn’t CSK, but Rising Pune Supergiant.

RPSG had been brought in as a stop-gap franchise due to CSK and RR being banned for two years for illegal activities, and they very nearly won the final too. MI clinched an absolute thriller of a final by 1 run but they were once again the kings of the IPL.

IPL Winners 2018

Chennai Super Kings

Having returned from their 2-year ban, CSK came back with a vengeance and would go on to win their third title and once again draw level with MI in terms of titles won. And they would do so by beating an SRH side that quietly emerged as one of the best teams of the year.

SRH would have been confident after they set a total of 178-6 while batting first, but CSK hunted down the total in 18.3 overs thanks in no small part to an unbeaten century from opener Shane Watson. It was a big reminder of the side’s intentions to once again become a title-winning force.

IPL Winners 2019

Mumbai Indians

2019 saw a CSK vs MI clash in the final for the first time since 2015 and it was yet another classic final, as both teams looked likely to win at some point and the team that did win it in MI did so on the final ball once again, just as they had done in 2017.

MI had scored 149-8 in the first innings and it seemed like Shane Watson’s brilliance might once again make that a small total. But MI hit back later on and won courtesy of an absolute peach of a ball from Lasith Malinga.

IPL Winners 2020

Mumbai Indians

In what was arguably the most one-sided final in the tournament since 2011, MI went on to become the first side to win 5 IPL titles. They did so by absolutely dominating not only the group stages but also the final against first-time finalists Delhi Capitals.

Batting first, MI got 200-5 on the board and that was always going to be a tricky chase for DC. They lost wickets on the regular and in the end were only able to get 143-8 in their 20 overs, handing MI their fifth title on a platter.

IPL Winners 2021

Chennai Super Kings

The 2021 final more than made up for the one-sided nature of the 2020 final, as CSK and KKR clashed in a final for the first time since 2012 – and it was CSK who wound up having the last laugh this time around.

KKR were chasing down 193 to win with consummate ease thanks to a good opening show from Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer, but a middle order collapse handed CSK back the initiative in the game and they ended up winning the final by 27 runs, thus becoming the second team to win 4 titles.

IPL Winners 2022

Gujarat Titans

2022 saw the introduction of 2 new teams in Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans. And not only did both of them end up making it to the playoffs, but one of the new teams in Gujarat Titans wound up winning the title as well.

It was another one-sided final, thanks in no small part to Rajasthan Royals putting up a small total of 130-9 on the board. Gujarat ended up chasing that down in 18.1 overs, the result never really in doubt. Thus, the Hardik Pandya-led Titans become the first first-time IPL champions since SRH in 2016.

IPL Winners 2023
