ICC World Cup 2023 Time Table

ICC World Cup 2023 will start on 5th October. Time Table of the tournament is given above.

ICC World Cup 2023 Teams

The ICC World Cup will see 10 teams in total, with 8 teams directly confirmed to be a part of the tournament and 2 teams qualified through World Cup Qualufiers.

Those 8 nations are India, England, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa.

India qualified on the virtue of being the host nation, whereas the remaining 7 teams qualified via the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

The Super League was instituted by the BCCI to make a formal qualifying process for all nations, but has already been scrapped for the next edition of the tournament.

The remaining two teams will qualified via the qualifier event that happened in June-July this year in Zimbabwe.

However, the 2027 edition of the ICC World Cup will see an expanded World Cup as there will be 14 teams that take part in the next edition.

ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifier

The qualifier featured a total of 10 teams, took part in order to determine the last 2 members to qualify.

Those 10 teams were divided as follows – the bottom five teams of the World Cup Super League, the top 3 teams from the 2019-23 World Cup League 2 and the top 2 teams from the 2023 World Cup Qualifier play-off.

The teams then played each other in a single round-robin format event, from which the teams that finished in the top 2 Sri Lanka and Netherland are qualified for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Interestingly, two of the teams who were a part of the qualifying process are former world champions – West Indies and Zimbabwe. And they failed to qualify for ICC World Cup 2023.

West Indies won the first two editions of the ICC World Cup in 1975 and 1979 and were denied a third straight win only due to India’s underdog story for the ages.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, won their only ICC World Cup in 1996 and that too was in many ways an underdog story; they won the tournament despite being an associate member nation of the ICC rather than a full-time member.

Teams that were part of this qualifier are as follows – West Indies, Sri Lanka, Netherland, Ireland, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, USA, UAE and the hosts of the tournament Zimbabwe.

ICC World Cup 2023 Venues

The venues that will be hosting games are as follows – Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, New Delhi, Pune, Lucknow, Dharamsala and Mumbai.

Two other venues have been mooted in the past and those were Mohali and Nagpur. However, these venues will not be featured in any games for the ICC World Cup.

The final of the tournament as well as the opening game will take place in Ahmedabad, which makes sense given the capacity and modernity of the new stadium.

ICC World Cup 2023 Format

The format for the 2023 World Cup is the same as the 2019 World Cup, which saw all 10 teams face off against each other in a single round robin format.

It adds a lot of games to the tournament, as every team will play 9 games and thus it explains why the tournament will run for over a month.

The top 4 from the league standings will make it to the semi-finals, the winners of whom will meet in the final of the tournament.

However, this format will not be there for the next edition of the tournament which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in 2027.

That tournament will see the tournament expanded to 14 teams and will see the return of the Super 6 format, meaning two rounds of group stage games and then the knockouts.
