Former Indian Opener asks for MS Dhoni's inclusion in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup

The upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in the US and West Indies from June 2, has sparked intense speculation about India’s 15-member squad. While stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah are run-aways for the team, the competition for other positions is fierce.

One contentious issue among cricketing circles is the wicketkeeping role, with several prominent contenders competing for selection, including Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Dinesh Karthik.

Dinesh Karthik, the seasoned finisher from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has attracted significant attention due to his recent form, despite being 38 years old. Many critics argue that Karthik would be an ideal choice for India in the T20 World Cup. His impressive performance includes scoring 251 runs in 8 matches with a striking strike rate of 196.09, an average of 62.75, and a highest score of 83.

Apart from Karthik, fans have also been enthralled by the performances of former India captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter MS Dhoni this season. The veteran cricketer has amassed 87 runs in 7 matches at a phenomenal strike rate of 255, causing significant trouble for bowlers, particularly in the final overs of the game.

In a discussion on Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag advocated for MS Dhoni’s inclusion in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. He highlighted Dhoni’s exceptional strike rate of 255 and his ability to consistently contribute without getting out.

Sehwag pointed out that Dhoni has scored 87 runs in just 34 balls so far in the tournament. Considering India’s schedule in the T20 World Cup and the quality of opposition teams in the initial rounds, Sehwag emphasized that batting opportunities would be limited.

He suggested that Dhoni, with his adept wicketkeeping skills and ability to finish matches, would be invaluable, especially against top teams like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and potentially Pakistan in the later overs of the game.

Sehwag’s endorsement of Dhoni for the T20 World Cup has ignited further debate among cricket enthusiasts. While Dhoni’s striking performances this season have been commendable, selectors face the challenging task of balancing experience with youth and ensuring the squad is well-equipped for the demanding tournament ahead.

The final decision on India’s wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup remains eagerly anticipated as the cricketing world eagerly awaits the tournament’s commencement.
