The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is set to be one of the most highly-anticipated editions of the ODI World Cup in recent memory.
India will be hosting this edition of the tournament, which makes it the first ODI World Cup that they have hosted since the last time they won the trophy – 2011.
What’s more, it’s also the first time they have held an ICC tournament in the country in 7 years, with the 2016 T20 World Cup being the last such tournament held in the nation.
India did have hosting rights to the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup but that tournament, while hosted by the BCCI, was held in the UAE in lie of the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc in India at that point.
But it is these very reasons that fans are hyped at the fact that the World Cup will be held in India, a cricket crazy nation to say the least.
That being said, the World Cup is nothing without the teams. And there will be 10 teams that vie for supremacy of being crowned the world’s best ODI team.
In this article, we will look at the teams that have been confirmed to take part in the tournament as well as the ones who are still in with a chance of qualifying.

ICC ODI World Cup Trophy Winners
Of the 8 teams that have qualified for the ODI World Cup 2023 so far, four of the teams have won the trophy at least one.
England:
England are the most recent winners, having clinched their maiden title in the last edition of the tournament that was held in 2019.
That they have won the tournament just once despite being not only the inventors of the game but having hosted the tournament the most speaks volumes about how much England have underachieved in the history of the World Cup.
However they will start this tournament as one of the favourites, having also clinched the latest edition of the T20 World Cup that took place in 2022.
India:
India, the hosts of this edition of the tournament, have won the World Cup twice – and both in very different circumstances.
In 1983, they were the underdogs that defied the odds to beat the mighty West Indies in the final and thus kickstart a love story with the sport that goes on till this date.
In 2011, they were not only the hosts but also the outright favourites to win the tournament and they did so in style, with MS Dhoni’s six ending India’s 28-year wait for a title at long last.

Australia:
Australia, however, are the most successful team in this bracket – they have won the tournament a whopping five times, having won the tournament for the first time in 1987.
They then won back-to-back-to-back World Cups in 1999, 2003 and 2007 before winning it once again when they hosted the tournament in 2015, their last ODI World Cup triumph till date.
The Aussies will doubtless start even this edition of the tournament as one of the favourites, boasting a settled batting as well as bowling line-up.
Pakistan:
The last team in this bracket is Pakistan, who won their one and only World Cup all the way back in 1992, when the legendary Imran Khan was at the helm of the team.
They have failed to win it since but have won the T20 World Cup in 2009 and also were the runners-up in the last edition of the tournament in 2022, so will be a credible threat to any team.
Sri Lanka:
Sri Lanka haven’t Qualified for ICC ODI World Cup 2023 yet. In 1996 Sri Lanka won the World Cup. They will be playing World Cup Qualifiers to get into World Cup 2023.
West Indies:
West Indies is another team failed to qualify for ICC ODI World Cup 2023. They won back to back two ODI World Cup in 1975 and 1979. But they have to play World Cup Qualifiers to be a part of ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

ICC ODI World Cup 2023 – The Automatic Qualification
New Zealand are the one team that stand out in the ‘best of the rest’ as far as the other 4 teams to have sealed automatic qualification.
This is because the Kiwis have played in both of the past two World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019 respectively, a massive achievement given they’ve never been seen as one of the financially mighty teams.
There’s also South Africa who come in as powerhouses, although they just about managed to seal automatic qualification, needing a win in their last Super League series against Ireland to be assured of a top 8 finish.
They have always been competitive in World Cups but are also unfortunately known for choking in big moments.
Bangladesh and Afghanistan are the other two teams to seal automatic qualification, and both have rather different histories in the sport.
Bangladesh have always felt on the precipice of making it among the top sides and have a passionate cricket fanbase. However, they have always failed to make the step up when it matters most.
Afghanistan, by contrast, is one of the youngest cricketing nations in the world and also arguably its most upwardly mobile nation right now.
The fact the war-torn nation are good at the sport is in itself an achievement given they’ve not played the sport too long, and they will hope to showcase their pedigree on the world stage.
ICC ODI World Cup 2023 – The Qualifiers
The last two teams to qualify for the World Cup will be decided by a qualifying tournament set to be held in Zimbabwe.
Interestingly, the qualifier features two teams who have actually won the World Cup – West Indies and Sri Lanka.
Both of these sides failed to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup but would be considered favourites to be the top 2 sides in this mini tournament.
The format for the qualifiers is simple – 10 teams will face each other in a single round robin format with no knockouts. The teams that finish first and second make it to the World Cup.
Aside from Sri Lanka and West Indies, the other teams to be a part of the qualifiers are Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Ireland, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, USA and UAE.
This qualifying format will change from the 2027 edition of the tournament, as 14 teams will play the World Cup instead of the 10 that are currently set to play in the tournament.
